A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become starving," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
